TOPIC: Database connection failed

Database connection failed 13 Years, 5 Months ago
Hi all,
here we are with a brand new Blade150 on our network running Solaris 8.
I downloaded the Sol8 GoglobalUX and installed in on the box.
The license file is of the "USE_SERVER" type.

At startup I get the following messages:
----------------
Starting the database: Done.
Starting the GraphOn Login Daemon: FAILED.
A likely cause is that another program is listening on TCP port 491 or
791. Look for the message "startup: unable to create any listening
sockets" in /opt/graphon/etc/gold.log, then either free the TCP ports
491 and 791 or specify a different value for GOLD_PORT and
GOLD_SSL_PORT in /opt/graphon/etc/goglobalux.

Another likely cause is that the gold daemon could not connect to the
database. Look for the message "startup: cannot open database" in
/opt/graphon/etc/gold.log, then check /opt/graphon/etc/gdbi.err for
suggestions.

Stopping the GraphOn Login Daemon: Done.
Stopping the database: Done.
------------
Port 491 and 791 are both free.
/opt/graphon/etc/gdbi.err is not created.
And the content of /opt/graphon/etc/gold.log is as follows:
-------------
[08 Jun 10:31:31 (I)] Log opened.
[08 Jun 10:31:31 (I)] startup: enabling default authentication methods
[08 Jun 10:31:31 (I)] startup: connecting to database
[08 Jun 10:31:31 (E)] Database connection failed, retrying:
[08 Jun 10:31:31 (E)] Database connection failed, retrying:
[08 Jun 10:31:31 (E)] Database connection failed, retrying:
<snip>
[08 Jun 10:31:36 (E)] Database connection failed, retrying:
[08 Jun 10:31:36 (E)] Database connection failed:
[08 Jun 10:31:36 (F)] startup: cannot open database
[08 Jun 10:31:36 (I)] Log closed.

This is the first time on this box that GoGlobalUX is installed.
Why is it not working??
I'm really at a loss here. Everything is new!!
A few pointer would be much appreciated.

Regards,
Frits.

Frits,

Which version of our software are you running? If this is a brand new installation, you should be running version 2.1.2 available from our website.

Some suggestions...

Make sure your license server file indicates support for a 2.1 release. In other words, look for a line

INCREMENT UX graphon 2.1 permanent ...

Finally, follow the IPC memory requirements as listed on the following Forum FAQ: http://www.graphon.com/support/forum/viewtopic.php?t=12

-Erik

Failing to start the postgresql database 13 Years, 4 Months ago Karma: 0
We are running V2.1 GoGlobalUX.
We are running a 3 redundant server option with
INCREMENT UX graphon 2.1 permanent 8 set correctly.

It now appears to me that postgres will not run when started by root.
However goglobalux must run as root which will start, via gdbi, the postgresql postmaster which offcourse will bom out.

I think this is where conflict lies.
Is there an easy way to get this resolved?

Frits.

Frits and I corresponded over email. For the benefit of anyone reading this in the forum, I pointed out that the 'gdbi' command is used to start Postgres and that it sepecifically calls setuid() to drop root priviledges before running Postgres. Postgres, in fact, will absolutely refuse to run as root (try running pg_ctl start as root and you'll get the error).
