TOPIC: Postgres does not start
#2081
Postgres does not start 10 Years ago
We had Goglobal working before we ran some security scripts, and I don't have a baseline on the previous configuration. Basically, the db does not initialize. When first installed, does root own all the installed files? This is a Solaris 9.5 box.

# ./goglobalux stop
Stopping the GraphOn Login Daemon: Done.
Stopping the database: Done.
# ./goglobalux start
Starting the database: FAILED.
See /usr/local/graphon/etc/gdbi.log for more information.
Starting the GraphOn Login Daemon: FAILED.
A likely cause is that another program is listening on TCP port 0 or
791. Look for the message "startup: unable to create any listening
sockets" in /usr/local/graphon/etc/gold.log, then either free the TCP
ports 0 and 791 or specify a different value for GOLD_PORT and
GOLD_SSL_PORT in /usr/local/graphon/etc/goglobalux.

Another likely cause is that the gold daemon could not connect to the
database. Look for the message "startup: cannot open database" in
/usr/local/graphon/etc/gold.log, then check
/usr/local/graphon/etc/gdbi.log for suggestions.

We are experiencing the same problem. Did you ever get this resolved?
Thanks,

#When I look in /usr/local/graphon/postgresql/data at a working and failing
#installation on two different machines. The main difference I see is the
#failing machine does not have the file "postmaster.pid"

I have to use sudo to look in these directories and permissions are restricted.
Does the person trying to invoke a GoGlobal session need write access to these
files. I don't think so as it was working last week.

For the record, postgresql is no longer part of the current product offering. It is a good database engine, but was too much for what GO-Global needed, and the administrative overhead was deemed inappropriate. Later versions use a simpler XML file format for storing this information.

That said, postgresql has built-in limitations (for security reasons) against running as root. For this reason, the ${GOGLOBAL_ROOT}/postgresql/data/ directory should NOT be owned by root, but by the "database user" which is configurable, but defaults to "goglobal".

If you find you need to reinitialize the database, you can do so by following the directions here:

www.graphon.com/component/option,com_kun...,view/id,13/catid,1/

We have had rare reports of other problems starting the postgresql components of the system, but to troubleshoot these, we generally prefer you to contact support @ graphon.com directly so that someone can help you.

Thanks,
Troy
