I needed the 2.1.1 native Linux client because one of my users is using Linux and he wants to run an 8-bit application. The Java client doesn't seem to support 8-bit mode.

The Linux client works, but it doesn't seem to work correctly to run an 8-bit application using "multidepth". The desktop comes up OK, but running the app leads to "Failed to find 8-plane PseudoColor Visual". The Windows client works fine.

There's a simple workaround, but it's still a minor problem, and the docs said it was supposed to be similar to the Windows client, so this behavior might be a bug.

Hello Ben,

We believe that this is a bug in the native X11 client, and have it on the list of things to investigate and hopefully address in the next release.

For the record, the Java client's 8-bit mode support is based on the client's display settings. I believe if you lower the resolution of the client to 8-bit (256 colors) you'll find that the Java client supports 8-bit mode (but no longer will be able to run 16-/24-bit applications).
